Be careful of what becomes the liberal tradition. As Rousseau notes, the freedom they espouse is that of nature. What the Enlightenment needs is moral freedom, the freedom from free nature. But this appears as a real killjoy to most people, who have not developed their whole self. They see their natural freedom as their whole self.

Thanks for the comment, Onno! I mention some of the thinkers whose views on freedom I resonate with in my piece on redefining freedom, including past thinkers like Wilhelm von Humboldt and John Stuart Mill and current ones like Peter Brown. I also draw inspiration from those who Jonathan Israel calls the “radical Enlightenment” thinkers like Thomas Paine, Joel Barlow, Richard Price, etc.
